Shabana Ather currently serves as President of CAMP NJ and has been part of the chapter's Board since its launch in 2010. Prior to the chapter's inception, she participated in several CAMP initiatives at both the national and local levels, including the 2008 and 2009 annual leadership conferences and NYC/Philly chapter events.

Professionally, Shabana has over 10 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Her current position at Merck focuses on clinical trials management, including protocol design, clinical data monitoring, and publication of study results. She received an MPH from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ and a BS in Public Health from Rutgers University.

Shabana enjoys spending free time with family and friends and likes to participate in various humanitarian efforts, especially charity races. She runs like a girl—just try to keep up! >> Top

Afsha Bawany serves as the communications director of CAMP. Since 2011, she has volunteered for CAMP in editing CAMP newsletters and developing social media content.

As communications director, Afsha oversees media outreach for the organization. She has worked in journalism and media relations for the last nine years.

Afsha graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in journalism and a minor in political science. A former reporter, Afsha has written for media outlets such as The Boston Globe, Las Vegas Sun, Henderson Home News, The Orange County Register and Las Vegas Business Press. She currently works in media relations in Las Vegas.

In her spare time, Afsha enjoys spending time with her family and friends, volunteering, assisting her local Muslim community in publicizing a positive image of Muslims through media, working with Muslim youth and promoting the importance of seeking education and acquiring knowledge through any means – no matter what the age.

While there are many communication tools available to keep in touch, Afsha says nothing beats picking up the phone to catch up. Skype comes in a close second. >> Top


Aziz Hasan
is CAMP New York's Communications Officer. He has been helping the board behind the scenes for the last few years, most notably on the creative direction behind the rebrand of CAMP. During the day Aziz works in advertising at SAY Media as the Director of Engagement Strategy. In this role, his primary focus is creating interactive brand experiences for Fortune 500 companies. Most recently, Aziz served as the Marketing and Brand Director for Eva Khurshid, a high-end luxury clothing brand for women. As the Brand Director he created the brand platform and its visual communication strategy.

Beyond the desk, Aziz is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer building brand identities for emerging companies. He focuses on building their brand concepts, visual identity and marketing collateral. But if you catch him on the weekend you might find him on the streets dancing around New York building up his skills as a hip-hop dancer.

Asma Hashmi currently serves as President of the CAMP - Chicago Chapter. Intermittently since 2004, she has held various Board positions as well as serving as an advisor.

Asma has over 12 years experience in the human resource and recruiting industries, where she has worked as an independent consultant for several Fortune 500 clients. Her expertise includes recruitment process outsourcing, account management, organizational development, career counseling, and performance improvement.

She was a Founding Board Member and Director of Personal Development for the Muslim Women’s Alliance (MWA); while also being actively involved with Inner-city Muslim Action Network (IMAN), a community-based nonprofit and was one of the organizing leaders for the urban festival Takin’ it to the Streets.

Asma is currently completing a M.A. in Human Performance Improvement at Roosevelt University and has earned a B.S. in Psychology from Loyola University. >> Top

She currently lives in New York City, and works for Princeton University managing their off-campus residential real estate development projects.

Uzma Kaleem currently serves as the Deputy Executive Director of CAMP. Uzma has been with CAMP since 2008 most recently serving as the President of the New York chapter.

Uzma has over 10 years of work experience most recently as a Strategic Account Manager at Mimeo.com, consulting at international brands such as Hess, Walt Disney and Estee Lauder on print on demand offerings and implementations. Her previous work experience includes managing radio advertising sales at Disney, working in the strategic alliances group at Neustar, and conducting field marketing in the technology division of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

She contributed to CAMP New York by by managing events including the CAMP’s Annual Iftaar Dinner, professional networking events, cultural programs and contributed to the Leadership Summit.

Outside of her CAMP responsibilities, Uzma enjoys being involved with the community whether it is attending a charity event or volunteering with Habitat for Humanity. Uzma is also the co-founder of Jewish Muslim Volunteer Alliance, an interfaith group that was created out of her interest in holding an iftaar in a synagogue. In her spare time Uzma contemplates the age-old question: If nothing sticks to Teflon, how do they get it to stick to the pan?

Zehra Naqvi, is currently the Conference Director for the 5th Annual Leadership Summit scheduled to take place on April 21, 2012. She has been an active member of CAMP’s New York chapter since 2007. Zehra is also a fifth-year Associate at Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP. She earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Pennsylvania and her law degree at the American University, Washington College of Law.

Zehra had been actively involved with a number of volunteer-based organizations while living in Washington D.C., including South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), Project IMPACT (DC), Network of South Asian Professionals (DC Chapter), and Kahani. Since moving back to her hometown, she has become involved with CAMP and the Muslim Bar Association of New York (MuBANY). Additionally, in 2008, Zehra co-founded the Council of Shia Professionals (CSP), to establish a network between, and promote activism amongst, the growing number of Shia professionals in the New York/New Jersey area. CSP organized a number of networking opportunities for professionals, as well as workshops on job placement, financial planning, will writing, networking, and resume drafting.

Apart from her job and volunteer work, Zehra’s favorite pastime is collecting passport stamps. She has traveled to some pretty interesting destinations, including Turkey, Iraq, Chile, Syria, Lebanon, Greece, France, Italy, Jordan, Argentina, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. As you might imagine, TSA and customs/immigration officers are delighted to hear all about each of her trips.

Sabrina Qureshi currently serves as the Finance and Operations Director of CAMP. She joined CAMP in 2006 as an events planner for the CAMP Chicago Chapter. Sabrina was the Conference Co-Manager in 2011, Assistant Conference Manager of the 2009 conference, and was the Sponsorship Manager for the 2008 conference. She continues to be active with the Chicago Chapter in an advisory role.

Professionally, Sabrina is a Research Operations Specialist for a financial research firm in Chicago with 7 years of experience in the financial industry. Sabrina is responsible for streamlining processes while maintaining strict quality control. She is also a business analyst for the firm. Sabrina graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2003 with a degree in Finance.

Sabrina strongly believes in giving back to community and enjoys volunteering for various organizations as well as supporting humanitarian causes. >> Top


Asma Shafi is a freelance and full-time graphic designer with over 10 years experience in various industries including finance, law, entertainment and advertising. 

Asma has a masters in Design from Pratt Institute and has her own design firm -- HummingDesign. Currently, Asma has an obsession for information design, metallic colors and stripes. >> Top

Benish Shah has over 10 years of experience in strategic business growth. A partner at Sardar Law Firm, Benish works primarily with fashion and tech entrepreneurs, and is a serial entrepreneur herself. She has served as the Chief Strategy Officer for Eva Khurshid, a NYC womenswear company, co-founded Global Executive Board LLC, and is currently the CEO of VICAIRE NY. Benish also co-authored a chapter in & edited the book Sandstorm: a leaderless revolution in the digital age (taught at Harvard, Fordham, Texas A&M and more), along with heading the marketing strategy for the book. She has worked at the Securities Exchange Commission, done the large-law firm late nights, and worked as a strategy consultant to numerous political nonprofits. Prior to law school, she was a Senior Consultant at the General Counsel Roundtable of CEB, working with General Counsels of Fortune 500 & Global 100 companies. In addition to her professional work, she has led research on anti-trafficking in women and Shari'ah Law. Her expertise in business strategy & law have led to speaking invitations from The University of Chicago, Oxford University, University of Pennsylvania, New York University, Touro Law Center and University of Baltimore Law school. She has been quoted in Portfolio.com & The Huffington Post and published in The Washington Times, Rutgers Law Record, BroadStreet Times, and Touro Law Center. Afsheen Shamsi is the Vice President of CAMP NJ. Afsheen attended the CAMP Leadership Summit in 2009 and the 2010 CAMP Panels at ISNA and became an avid fan of CAMP. She helped to start up the CAMP NJ chapter and was the National Sponsorship Lead for the 2011 CAMP Leadership Summit along with Asma Hashmi.

Afsheen founded Philanthropia Consulting LLC which focuses on helping non-profits with fundraising and board development. Prior to owning her own business, Afsheen worked in the non-profit sector for several years including at CAIR-NJ, CAIR-NY and the Crisis Assistance Ministry in North Carolina. Afsheen also served as an Advisor to the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations working on issues related to development and immigration. She holds degrees in International Studies, Political Science and Economics. Afsheen has been elected to public office and serves on the Princeton School Board.

Afsheen has been appointed to the Princeton Human Services Commission. She has also been elected to the Board of the Princeton Community Democratic Organization. Afsheen has been nominated to serve on the Board of the ACLU-NJ and her term begins in January of 2012. >> Top

Samia Siddiqui is a new member of the CAMP Philly Board. Prior to the joining the CAMP Philly board, she participated in several CAMP activities in Philadelphia and New York including the CAMP Leadership Summit.

Samia has over seven years experience in the pharmaceutical industry with broad experience in clinical development of biologics at start-ups and larger companies. Samia received her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and religious studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a doctorate in biology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After graduate school she worked at a start up biotech company as a research and regulatory scientist prior to her current position at ImClone Systems. At ImClone Systems, she worked as a Regulatory Strategist within the Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Control department, prior to transitioning into her current role as a Regulatory Strategist focusing on clinical strategy for oncology trials.
